[Plasma membrane lipid composition in liver regeneration: degree of fatty acid desaturation]. 1979

G Bruscalupi, and M T Mangiantini, and S Spagnuolo, and A Trentalance

In the context of the biochemical characterization of the plasma membrane during liver regeneration, the fatty acid composition of phospholipids has been determined. Experiments were carried out on liver plasma membrane phospholipid extracts obtained from livers of laparatomized or partially hepatectomized rats 1.5, 4, 15 and 24 h after surgery. The results show no significant change in fatty acid composition and insaturation degree at any time after partial hepatectomy. The results are discussed in view of the lower cholesterol/phospholipid ratio observed in regenerating liver plasma membrane.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008099 Liver A large lobed glandular organ in the abdomen of vertebrates that is responsible for detoxification, metabolism, synthesis and storage of various substances. Livers
D008115 Liver Regeneration Repair or renewal of hepatic tissue. Liver Regenerations,Regeneration, Liver,Regenerations, Liver

D008563 Membrane Lipids Lipids, predominantly phospholipids, cholesterol and small amounts of glycolipids found in membranes including cellular and intracellular membranes. These lipids may be arranged in bilayers in the membranes with integral proteins between the layers and peripheral proteins attached to the outside. Membrane lipids are required for active transport, several enzymatic activities and membrane formation. D010743 Phospholipids Lipids containing one or more phosphate groups, particularly those derived from either glycerol (phosphoglycerides see GLYCEROPHOSPHOLIPIDS) or sphingosine (SPHINGOLIPIDS). They are polar lipids that are of great importance for the structure and function of cell membranes and are the most abundant of membrane lipids, although not stored in large amounts in the system. Phosphatides,Phospholipid
D005227 Fatty Acids Organic, monobasic acids derived from hydrocarbons by the equivalent of oxidation of a methyl group to an alcohol, aldehyde, and then acid. Fatty acids are saturated and unsaturated (FATTY ACIDS, UNSATURATED). D006498 Hepatectomy Excision of all or part of the liver. (Dorland, 28th ed) Hepatectomies
D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA.
