["Low triiodothyronine (T3) syndrome": "thyroxine (T4) euthyroidism" evidence (author's transl)]. 1979

J L Wémeau, and J Lefebvre, and M Linquette

As first described in serious systemic illnesses isolated decreased T3 plasma concentration was related to impaired peripheral conversion of T4, to T3 with preferential production of reverse T3 (rT3). A "low T3 syndrome" was seen in 47 out of 109 patients with extra-thyroidal diseases. Metabolic state, TSH and TSH responses to TRH were normal despite of low T3 concentration. Euthyroidism seems mainly due to T4 itself in these patients.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007037 Hypothyroidism A syndrome that results from abnormally low secretion of THYROID HORMONES from the THYROID GLAND, leading to a decrease in BASAL METABOLIC RATE. In its most severe form, there is accumulation of MUCOPOLYSACCHARIDES in the SKIN and EDEMA, known as MYXEDEMA. It may be primary or secondary due to other pituitary disease, or hypothalamic dysfunction. D009765 Obesity A status with BODY WEIGHT that is grossly above the recommended standards, usually due to accumulation of excess FATS in the body. The standards may vary with age, sex, genetic or cultural background. In the BODY MASS INDEX, a BMI greater than 30.0 kg/m2 is considered obese, and a BMI greater than 40.0 kg/m2 is considered morbidly obese (MORBID OBESITY).
