A survey on the present concepts about the physics of laser radiation and its effects upon biological structures is presented. An approach has been chosen which also considers the influence of quantities such as bean geometry, heat conduction and absorption upon the lesions produced. Finally the physical and biological effects of short-pulse, high power density laser pulses are described.
