Severe hemolytic disease of the newborn associated with anti-JSb. 1978

R F Lowe, and A T Musengezi, and P Moores

The red blood cells of the group A infant of a group O central African Negro woman of the Zezuru tribe with anti-Lea and anti-JSb in her serum were found to be strongly agglutinated by a commerical antiglobulin reagent six days after birth. The high concentration of bilirubin in the infant's serum gradually decreased but he became profoundly anemic and, in the absence of a suitable donor, was successfully transfused with blood from his mother. Subsequent tests using the maternal anti-JSb diluted one in ten to avoid agglutination by the anti-Lea showed that the frequency of the JS(b-) phenotype in group O Zezuru is approximately one per cent.

D001789 Blood Group Antigens Sets of cell surface antigens located on BLOOD CELLS. They are usually membrane GLYCOPROTEINS or GLYCOLIPIDS that are antigenically distinguished by their carbohydrate moieties. D004899 Erythroblastosis, Fetal A condition characterized by the abnormal presence of ERYTHROBLASTS in the circulation of the FETUS or NEWBORNS. It is a disorder due to BLOOD GROUP INCOMPATIBILITY, such as the maternal alloimmunization by fetal antigen RH FACTORS leading to HEMOLYSIS of ERYTHROCYTES, hemolytic anemia (ANEMIA, HEMOLYTIC), general edema (HYDROPS FETALIS), and SEVERE JAUNDICE IN NEWBORN. D000017 ABO Blood-Group System The major human blood type system which depends on the presence or absence of two antigens A and B. Type O occurs when neither A nor B is present and AB when both are present. A and B are genetic factors that determine the presence of enzymes for the synthesis of certain glycoproteins mainly in the red cell membrane.
