365 aeromonads isolated from milk, water and minced meat were tested in 24 biochemical characters. By application of a numerical method the material was devided into two subgroups. The properties of these subgroups are not in accordance with the definitions of species and subspecies of the taxonomical system of Aeromonas as it is accepted at present. With regard to the priority of the name A. punctata it is suggested to make use of only this name till the real combinations of characters and the resulting arrangement of groups are cleared to a better degree.
