[Activity of parotid isoamylases in the ethionine-treated rat (author's transl)]. 1978

C Arglebe, and H D Einrauch, and R Chilla

In order to investigate the effects of ethionine (an antagonist of the essential amino acid, methionine) on the enzyme synthesis in the rat-parotid gland, rats were fed methionine-deficient diet and treated with DL-ethionine for 4 and 10 days. Compared with the controls, not only the synthesis but also the secretion of parotid isoamylases was impaired by ethionine. Acinar isoamylase activities dropped initially but increased distinctly after 10 days of ethionine treatment, possibly due to intra- as well as extracellular impairment of acinar protein secretion. After another 10 days during which no ethionine was given, the described changes were no longer observed.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007517 Isoamylase An enzyme that hydrolyzes 1,6-alpha-glucosidic branch linkages in glycogen, amylopectin, and their beta-limit dextrins. It is distinguished from pullulanase (EC 3.2.1.41) by its inability to attack pullulan and by the feeble action of alpha-limit dextrins. It is distinguished from amylopectin 6-glucanohydrolase (EC 3.2.1.69) by its action on glycogen. With EC 3.2.1.69, it produces the activity called "debranching enzyme". EC 3.2.1.68.
D008715 Methionine A sulfur-containing essential L-amino acid that is important in many body functions. L-Methionine,Liquimeth,Methionine, L-Isomer,Pedameth,L-Isomer Methionine,Methionine, L Isomer
D010306 Parotid Gland The largest of the three pairs of SALIVARY GLANDS. They lie on the sides of the FACE immediately below and in front of the EAR. Gland, Parotid,Glands, Parotid,Parotid Glands
D005001 Ethionine 2-Amino-4-(ethylthio)butyric acid. An antimetabolite and methionine antagonist that interferes with amino acid incorporation into proteins and with cellular ATP utilization. It also produces liver neoplasms.
D005260 Female Females
D006026 Glycoside Hydrolases Any member of the class of enzymes that catalyze the cleavage of the glycosidic linkage of glycosides and the addition of water to the resulting molecules. D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA.
