Neuropathologic features of idiopathic respiratory distress syndrome. 1979

R W Leech, and M I Olson, and E C Alvord

Evaluation of the neuropathologic alterations occurring in 170 consecutive autopsies in premature infants dying of the idiopathic respiratory distress syndrome (IRDS) reveals two large groups, hemorrhagic and nonhemorrhagic. Hemorrhages occurred in all possible sites and formed the single largest group. Such hemorrhages appeared to be related to the early death of many premature infants. The nonhemorrhagic group was quite variable, with the largest category of associated lesions being periventricular leukomalacia, the frequency of which increased with increasing age. We suggest that the nonhemorrhagic group may be an important factor in the morbidity of survivors.

D012127 Respiratory Distress Syndrome, Newborn A condition of the newborn marked by DYSPNEA with CYANOSIS, heralded by such prodromal signs as dilatation of the alae nasi, expiratory grunt, and retraction of the suprasternal notch or costal margins, mostly frequently occurring in premature infants, children of diabetic mothers, and infants delivered by cesarean section, and sometimes with no apparent predisposing cause. D001921 Brain The part of CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM that is contained within the skull (CRANIUM). Arising from the NEURAL TUBE, the embryonic brain is comprised of three major parts including PROSENCEPHALON (the forebrain); MESENCEPHALON (the midbrain); and RHOMBENCEPHALON (the hindbrain). The developed brain consists of CEREBRUM; CEREBELLUM; and other structures in the BRAIN STEM. Encephalon
D002543 Cerebral Hemorrhage Bleeding into one or both CEREBRAL HEMISPHERES including the BASAL GANGLIA and the CEREBRAL CORTEX. It is often associated with HYPERTENSION and CRANIOCEREBRAL TRAUMA.
