Electrophoretic investigation of gamma-glutamyl-cyclotransferase from human erythrocytes. 1980

P G Board

A new method is described for the localization of gamma-glutamyl-cyclotransferase (gamma GCT) after electrophoresis on starch gel. Electrophoresis of gamma GCT from human erythrocytes revealed a multiple banded pattern. A survey of 200 Australian blood donors failed to reveal any genetic variation.

D004592 Electrophoresis, Starch Gel Electrophoresis in which a starch gel (a mixture of amylose and amylopectin) is used as the diffusion medium. Starch Gel Electrophoresis
D004912 Erythrocytes Red blood cells. Mature erythrocytes are non-nucleated, biconcave disks containing HEMOGLOBIN whose function is to transport OXYGEN. D005453 Fluorescence The property of emitting radiation while being irradiated. The radiation emitted is usually of longer wavelength than that incident or absorbed, e.g., a substance can be irradiated with invisible radiation and emit visible light. X-ray fluorescence is used in diagnosis.
D005723 gamma-Glutamyltransferase An enzyme, sometimes called GGT, with a key role in the synthesis and degradation of GLUTATHIONE; (GSH, a tripeptide that protects cells from many toxins). It catalyzes the transfer of the gamma-glutamyl moiety to an acceptor amino acid. D000409 Alanine A non-essential amino acid that occurs in high levels in its free state in plasma. It is produced from pyruvate by transamination. It is involved in sugar and acid metabolism, increases IMMUNITY, and provides energy for muscle tissue, BRAIN, and the CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM.
