Effect of two types of beta-adrenergic blockade on gastric acid secretion during basal conditions and during histamine stimulation on non-vagotomized and in vagotomized gastric fistula dogs. 1980

F Gottrup, and D Andersen, and H Stødkilde Jørgensen

The effect of beta-adrenoreceptor blockade by propranolol and practolol on basal secretion and on submaximally histamine-stimulated gastric acid secretion was studied in conscious non-vagotomized and in vagotomized gastric fistula dogs. Neither propranolol (0.5 mg/kg) nor practolol (1.0 mg/kg), both intravenously, had a significant influence on basal or histamine-stimulated gastric acid secretion in non-vagotomized and vagotomized dogs. It is concluded that beta-adrenergic blockade has no influence on basal or histamine-stimulated gastric acid secretion in dogs. Furthermore, no differences were found between the non-vagotomized and the vagotomized stomach.

D011217 Practolol A beta-1 adrenergic antagonist that has been used in the emergency treatment of CARDIAC ARRYTHMIAS. Dalzic,Eralzdin Practolol,ICI-50172,ICI 50172,ICI50172,Practolol, Eralzdin
D011433 Propranolol A widely used non-cardioselective beta-adrenergic antagonist. Propranolol has been used for MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION; ARRHYTHMIA; ANGINA PECTORIS; HYPERTENSION; HYPERTHYROIDISM; MIGRAINE; PHEOCHROMOCYTOMA; and ANXIETY but adverse effects instigate replacement by newer drugs. D011674 Pulse The rhythmical expansion and contraction of an ARTERY produced by waves of pressure caused by the ejection of BLOOD from the left ventricle of the HEART as it contracts. Pulses
D004285 Dogs The domestic dog, Canis familiaris, comprising about 400 breeds, of the carnivore family CANIDAE. They are worldwide in distribution and live in association with people. (Walker's Mammals of the World, 5th ed, p1065) Canis familiaris,Dog

D006632 Histamine An amine derived by enzymatic decarboxylation of HISTIDINE. It is a powerful stimulant of gastric secretion, a constrictor of bronchial smooth muscle, a vasodilator, and also a centrally acting neurotransmitter. Ceplene,Histamine Dihydrochloride,Histamine Hydrochloride,Peremin
D000319 Adrenergic beta-Antagonists Drugs that bind to but do not activate beta-adrenergic receptors thereby blocking the actions of beta-adrenergic agonists. Adrenergic beta-antagonists are used for treatment of hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, angina pectoris, glaucoma, migraine headaches, and anxiety.
