The role of alpha-adrenoceptor blockade in the treatment of hypertension. 1983

S M Abrams, and P Turner

Early attempts to use alpha-adrenoceptor blockers in the treatment of hypertension were unsuccessful due to a high prevalence of side-effects. Now that the concept of two alpha-adrenoceptors, alpha 1 and alpha 2 has been investigated, specific alpha 1 postsynaptic adrenoceptor blocking drugs have become available to treat hypertension. Their efficacy, tolerance and acceptability are discussed, and indications for their usage suggested.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D006973 Hypertension Persistently high systemic arterial BLOOD PRESSURE. Based on multiple readings (BLOOD PRESSURE DETERMINATION), hypertension is currently defined as when SYSTOLIC PRESSURE is consistently greater than 140 mm Hg or when DIASTOLIC PRESSURE is consistently 90 mm Hg or more. D007217 Indoramin An alpha-1 adrenergic antagonist that is commonly used as an antihypertensive agent. Wy-21901,Wy 21901,Wy21901
D011224 Prazosin A selective adrenergic alpha-1 antagonist used in the treatment of HEART FAILURE; HYPERTENSION; PHEOCHROMOCYTOMA; RAYNAUD DISEASE; PROSTATIC HYPERTROPHY; and URINARY RETENTION. Furazosin,Minipress,Pratsiol,Prazosin HCL,Prazosin Hydrochloride,HCL, Prazosin,Hydrochloride, Prazosin
D011942 Receptors, Adrenergic, alpha One of the two major pharmacological subdivisions of adrenergic receptors that were originally defined by the relative potencies of various adrenergic compounds. The alpha receptors were initially described as excitatory receptors that post-junctionally stimulate SMOOTH MUSCLE contraction. However, further analysis has revealed a more complex picture involving several alpha receptor subtypes and their involvement in feedback regulation. D000317 Adrenergic alpha-Antagonists Drugs that bind to but do not activate alpha-adrenergic receptors thereby blocking the actions of endogenous or exogenous adrenergic agonists. Adrenergic alpha-antagonists are used in the treatment of hypertension, vasospasm, peripheral vascular disease, shock, and pheochromocytoma.
