Sperm antibodies in infertile women: a comparison of three methods for handling the cervical mucus for extraction of immunoglobulins. 1984

M Cerasaro, and A Lenzi, and A Massacesi, and F Dondero

Three procedures commonly employed in the extraction of soluble proteins from cervical mucus, for the application of the technique for the detection of sperm antibodies also in this biological fluid, were compared in order to establish which provided the highest yield. Studies were therefore carried out on 125 women with primary and secondary sterility characterized by good rheologic qualities of their mid-cycle cervical mucus and in presence of repeatedly poor PCTs, not justified by the seminal characteristics of their partners. The laboratory results and the statistical analysis have shown that as far as concerns IgG, liquefaction with bromelin and solubilization with Baker's buffer provide a better yield than ultracentrifugation; while bromelin alone has the best yield with IgA.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007136 Immunoglobulins Multi-subunit proteins which function in IMMUNITY. They are produced by B LYMPHOCYTES from the IMMUNOGLOBULIN GENES. They are comprised of two heavy (IMMUNOGLOBULIN HEAVY CHAINS) and two light chains (IMMUNOGLOBULIN LIGHT CHAINS) with additional ancillary polypeptide chains depending on their isoforms. The variety of isoforms include monomeric or polymeric forms, and transmembrane forms (B-CELL ANTIGEN RECEPTORS) or secreted forms (ANTIBODIES). They are divided by the amino acid sequence of their heavy chains into five classes (IMMUNOGLOBULIN A; IMMUNOGLOBULIN D; IMMUNOGLOBULIN E; IMMUNOGLOBULIN G; IMMUNOGLOBULIN M) and various subclasses. D001963 Bromelains Protein-digesting and milk-clotting enzymes found in PINEAPPLE fruit juice and stem tissue. Enzymes from the two sources are distinguished as fruit bromelain and stem bromelain. D002021 Buffers A chemical system that functions to control the levels of specific ions in solution. When the level of hydrogen ion in solution is controlled the system is called a pH buffer. Buffer
D002582 Cervix Mucus A slightly alkaline secretion of the endocervical glands. The consistency and amount are dependent on the physiological hormone changes in the menstrual cycle. It contains the glycoprotein mucin, amino acids, sugar, enzymes, and electrolytes, with a water content up to 90%. The mucus is a useful protection against the ascent of bacteria and sperm into the uterus.
