A technique of silver impregnation for nervous tissues with some thiocyanates. 1980

Y Ogawa

Taking advantage of some properties of thiocyanates, a technique of silver impregnation for nerve fibres in the human central nervous system is described. The following procedure is suggested: frozen sections 25-35 micrometer thick, 5-10% aqueous solution of ammonium thiocyanate or potassium thiocyanate, 10% aqueous solution of silver nitrate, ammoniacal silver solution, reduction in 20% formalin, gold toning, dehydrating and mounting. By this procedure, fine fibres appear in the color range from purple to dark purple on the almost colorless background.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D009412 Nerve Fibers Slender processes of NEURONS, including the AXONS and their glial envelopes (MYELIN SHEATH). Nerve fibers conduct nerve impulses to and from the CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM. Cerebellar Mossy Fibers,Mossy Fibers, Cerebellar,Cerebellar Mossy Fiber,Mossy Fiber, Cerebellar,Nerve Fiber
D009474 Neurons The basic cellular units of nervous tissue. Each neuron consists of a body, an axon, and dendrites. Their purpose is to receive, conduct, and transmit impulses in the NERVOUS SYSTEM. Nerve Cells,Cell, Nerve,Cells, Nerve,Nerve Cell,Neuron
D002467 Cell Nucleus Within a eukaryotic cell, a membrane-limited body which contains chromosomes and one or more nucleoli (CELL NUCLEOLUS). The nuclear membrane consists of a double unit-type membrane which is perforated by a number of pores; the outermost membrane is continuous with the ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM. A cell may contain more than one nucleus. (From Singleton & Sainsbury, Dictionary of Microbiology and Molecular Biology, 2d ed) Cell Nuclei,Nuclei, Cell,Nucleus, Cell
