Regulation of concanavalin A-activated suppressor cell activity by interferon. 1982

R A Moidel, and S A Schwartz, and T J Schnitzer

In addition to its antiviral activity, interferon (IF) has been shown to have a wide range of immunoregulatory effects in vivo and in vitro. IF has been observed to be produced by concanavalin A (Con A)-activated suppressor cells and has also been postulated to be of importance in modulating their suppressor activity. To explore this possibility further, we examined the capacity of interferon-treated Con A-activated suppressor cells to alter the normal mitogenic response to Con A. Con A-activated suppressor cells were resistant to treatment with IF and no effect of either lymphoblastoid or leukocyte IF, when utilized in concentrations ranging from 1-1000 U/ml, could be shown on the suppressor activity of Con A-activated cells.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007372 Interferons Proteins secreted by vertebrate cells in response to a wide variety of inducers. They confer resistance against many different viruses, inhibit proliferation of normal and malignant cells, impede multiplication of intracellular parasites, enhance macrophage and granulocyte phagocytosis, augment natural killer cell activity, and show several other immunomodulatory functions. Interferon
D008213 Lymphocyte Activation Morphologic alteration of small B LYMPHOCYTES or T LYMPHOCYTES in culture into large blast-like cells able to synthesize DNA and RNA and to divide mitotically. It is induced by INTERLEUKINS; MITOGENS such as PHYTOHEMAGGLUTININS, and by specific ANTIGENS. It may also occur in vivo as in GRAFT REJECTION. D008938 Mitosis A type of CELL NUCLEUS division by means of which the two daughter nuclei normally receive identical complements of the number of CHROMOSOMES of the somatic cells of the species. D002478 Cells, Cultured Cells propagated in vitro in special media conducive to their growth. Cultured cells are used to study developmental, morphologic, metabolic, physiologic, and genetic processes, among others. Cultured Cells,Cell, Cultured,Cultured Cell
D003208 Concanavalin A A MANNOSE/GLUCOSE binding lectin isolated from the jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis). It is a potent mitogen used to stimulate cell proliferation in lymphocytes, primarily T-lymphocyte, cultures.

D050378 T-Lymphocytes, Regulatory CD4-positive T cells that inhibit immunopathology or autoimmune disease in vivo. They inhibit the immune response by influencing the activity of other cell types. Regulatory T-cells include naturally occurring CD4+CD25+ cells, IL-10 secreting Tr1 cells, and Th3 cells.
