Effects of peptides on gastric emptying. 1984

A W Mangel, and A Koegel

The effects of peptides on gastric emptying of a liquid meal were studied in rats. Gastric emptying was found to be delayed following intraperitoneal injection of the octapeptide of cholecystokinin (CCK-8). Vasoactive intestinal peptide did not effect emptying, while substance P and neurotensin caused a moderate acceleration in gastric emptying. After oral administration of a solution containing the amino acids tryptophan and phenylalanine, but not glycine, a statistically significant inhibition of gastric emptying was observed. Our results suggest an involvement of CCK in the regulation of gastric emptying.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008297 Male Males
D009496 Neurotensin A biologically active tridecapeptide isolated from the hypothalamus. It has been shown to induce hypotension in the rat, to stimulate contraction of guinea pig ileum and rat uterus, and to cause relaxation of rat duodenum. There is also evidence that it acts as both a peripheral and a central nervous system neurotransmitter.
D010649 Phenylalanine An essential aromatic amino acid that is a precursor of MELANIN; DOPAMINE; noradrenalin (NOREPINEPHRINE), and THYROXINE. Endorphenyl,L-Phenylalanine,Phenylalanine, L-Isomer,L-Isomer Phenylalanine,Phenylalanine, L Isomer
D005746 Gastric Emptying The evacuation of food from the stomach into the duodenum. Emptying, Gastric,Emptyings, Gastric,Gastric Emptyings
D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA. Animal,Metazoa,Animalia
D012844 Sincalide An octapeptide hormone present in the intestine and brain. When secreted from the gastric mucosa, it stimulates the release of bile from the gallbladder and digestive enzymes from the pancreas. D013373 Substance P An eleven-amino acid neurotransmitter that appears in both the central and peripheral nervous systems. It is involved in transmission of PAIN, causes rapid contractions of the gastrointestinal smooth muscle, and modulates inflammatory and immune responses. D014364 Tryptophan An essential amino acid that is necessary for normal growth in infants and for NITROGEN balance in adults. It is a precursor of INDOLE ALKALOIDS in plants. It is a precursor of SEROTONIN (hence its use as an antidepressant and sleep aid). It can be a precursor to NIACIN, albeit inefficiently, in mammals. D014660 Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide A highly basic, 28 amino acid neuropeptide released from intestinal mucosa. It has a wide range of biological actions affecting the cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and respiratory systems and is neuroprotective. It binds special receptors (RECEPTORS, VASOACTIVE INTESTINAL PEPTIDE).
