The distribution of rabies virus, interferon and interferon-mediated enzymes, pppA(2'p5'A)n synthetase (2-5A synthetase) and poly(rI) . poly(rC)-Sepharose-bound protein kinase, was studied in different regions of the brains of rabies virus-infected rats. A broad range of virus infectivity was found in the brain stem, cerebellum, cortex, hippocampus and striatum. Similarly, the levels of interferon were variable (2500 to 60 000 units/mg protein in tissue extracts) in the different brain regions studied but were unrelated to the corresponding infectivities . The level of 2-5A synthetase and protein kinase was enhanced several-fold in the individual brain regions and the degree of such enhancement was correlated with the level of interferon.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007372 Interferons Proteins secreted by vertebrate cells in response to a wide variety of inducers. They confer resistance against many different viruses, inhibit proliferation of normal and malignant cells, impede multiplication of intracellular parasites, enhance macrophage and granulocyte phagocytosis, augment natural killer cell activity, and show several other immunomodulatory functions. Interferon

D011818 Rabies Acute VIRAL CNS INFECTION affecting mammals, including humans. It is caused by RABIES VIRUS and usually spread by contamination with virus-laden saliva of bites inflicted by rabid animals. Important animal vectors include the dog, cat, bat, fox, raccoon, skunk, and wolf. D001921 Brain The part of CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM that is contained within the skull (CRANIUM). Arising from the NEURAL TUBE, the embryonic brain is comprised of three major parts including PROSENCEPHALON (the forebrain); MESENCEPHALON (the midbrain); and RHOMBENCEPHALON (the hindbrain). The developed brain consists of CEREBRUM; CEREBELLUM; and other structures in the BRAIN STEM. Encephalon

D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA. D015088 2',5'-Oligoadenylate Synthetase An enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of ATP into a series of (2'-5') linked oligoadenylates and pyrophosphate in the presence of double-stranded RNA. These oligonucleotides activate an endoribonuclease (RNase L) which cleaves single-stranded RNA. Interferons can act as inducers of these reactions. 2',5'-Oligoadenylate Polymerase,2-5A Synthetase,(2'-5')An Polymerase,2',5'-Oligo(A) Polymerase,2',5'-Oligo(A) Synthetase,2,5 Oligoadenylate Polymerase,2,5 Oligoadenylate Synthetase,ATP-(2'-5')oligo(A)adenylyltransferase,2',5' Oligoadenylate Polymerase,2',5' Oligoadenylate Synthetase,Oligoadenylate Polymerase, 2,5,Oligoadenylate Synthetase, 2,5,Polymerase, 2',5'-Oligoadenylate,Polymerase, 2,5 Oligoadenylate,Synthetase, 2',5'-Oligoadenylate,Synthetase, 2,5 Oligoadenylate
