Observations on the source of pregnancy-associated plasma protein A (PAPP-A). 1984

N A Bersinger, and A Klopper

Pregnancy-associated plasma protein A (PAPP-A) was measured in 26 women before and after hysterectomy. The PAPP-A concentration declined significantly in 24 of them. It is concluded that the uterus is a source of the protein.

D007044 Hysterectomy Excision of the uterus. Hysterectomies
D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D011257 Pregnancy Proteins Proteins produced by organs of the mother or the PLACENTA during PREGNANCY. These proteins may be pregnancy-specific (present only during pregnancy) or pregnancy-associated (present during pregnancy or under other conditions such as hormone therapy or certain malignancies.) D011266 Pregnancy-Associated Plasma Protein-A A product of the PLACENTA, and DECIDUA, secreted into the maternal circulation during PREGNANCY. It has been identified as an IGF binding protein (IGFBP)-4 protease that proteolyzes IGFBP-4 and thus increases IGF bioavailability. It is found also in human FIBROBLASTS, ovarian FOLLICULAR FLUID, and GRANULOSA CELLS. The enzyme is a heterotetramer of about 500-kDa. D014599 Uterus The hollow thick-walled muscular organ in the female PELVIS. It consists of the fundus which is the site of EMBRYO IMPLANTATION and FETAL DEVELOPMENT. Beyond the isthmus at the perineal end of fundus, is CERVIX UTERI (the neck) opening into VAGINA. Beyond the isthmi at the upper abdominal end of fundus, are the FALLOPIAN TUBES.
