Subclavian steal: treatment with percutaneous transluminal angioplasty. 1984

W J Bean, and B A Rodan, and D A Franqui

Three cases of subclavian steal were treated with percutaneous transluminal angioplasty of the subclavian stenosis. One patient had dilatation of the lesion three separate times, without CNS complications. Initial screening with continuous wave Doppler ultrasound proved successful in identifying patients with the subclavian steal phenomenon and any associated carotid disease.

D013349 Subclavian Steal Syndrome A clinically significant reduction in blood supply to the BRAIN STEM and CEREBELLUM (i.e., VERTEBROBASILAR INSUFFICIENCY) resulting from reversal of blood flow through the VERTEBRAL ARTERY from occlusion or stenosis of the proximal subclavian or brachiocephalic artery. Common symptoms include VERTIGO; SYNCOPE; and INTERMITTENT CLAUDICATION of the involved upper extremity. Subclavian steal may also occur in asymptomatic individuals.
