[Squamous cell carcinoma of the palatine tonsils. Effect on the immune system in man]. 1984

W L Mang

Immunological monitoring was applied to 56 patients suffering from squamous cell carcinoma of the tonsils. The Immunofluorescence of oral swabs and measurements of unspecific suppressive activity of peripheral lymphocytes were tested. Autologous IgG antibodies directed against antigens of the tumor cells as well as higher levels of suppressor cells could be found in patients with carcinomas. These antibodies reacted similarly with allogeneic tonsillar carcinomas; cross reaction with other allogeneic tumor cells (bladder-kidney carcinoma) could not be detected. The findings indicate therapeutical consequences for the patients with high suppressor activity and immunofluorescence.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007107 Immune System The body's defense mechanism against foreign organisms or substances and deviant native cells. It includes the humoral immune response and the cell-mediated response and consists of a complex of interrelated cellular, molecular, and genetic components. Immune Systems,System, Immune,Systems, Immune
D008214 Lymphocytes White blood cells formed in the body's lymphoid tissue. The nucleus is round or ovoid with coarse, irregularly clumped chromatin while the cytoplasm is typically pale blue with azurophilic (if any) granules. Most lymphocytes can be classified as either T or B (with subpopulations of each), or NATURAL KILLER CELLS. Lymphoid Cells,Cell, Lymphoid,Cells, Lymphoid,Lymphocyte,Lymphoid Cell
D002294 Carcinoma, Squamous Cell A carcinoma derived from stratified SQUAMOUS EPITHELIAL CELLS. It may also occur in sites where glandular or columnar epithelium is normally present. D005455 Fluorescent Antibody Technique Test for tissue antigen using either a direct method, by conjugation of antibody with fluorescent dye (FLUORESCENT ANTIBODY TECHNIQUE, DIRECT) or an indirect method, by formation of antigen-antibody complex which is then labeled with fluorescein-conjugated anti-immunoglobulin antibody (FLUORESCENT ANTIBODY TECHNIQUE, INDIRECT). The tissue is then examined by fluorescence microscopy. D050378 T-Lymphocytes, Regulatory CD4-positive T cells that inhibit immunopathology or autoimmune disease in vivo. They inhibit the immune response by influencing the activity of other cell types. Regulatory T-cells include naturally occurring CD4+CD25+ cells, IL-10 secreting Tr1 cells, and Th3 cells.
