[Radiologic-pathologic correlations in tumors and tumor-like lesions of the hand (author's transl)]. 1982

A Nidecker, and W Remagen, and M Elke

Since 1972, 267 tumors or tumor-like lesions of the hand in 257 patients were examined at the bone tumor registry by the Swiss Society of Pathology in Basel, Switzerland. This is 9% of a total of 2,800 bone tumors submitted. An analysis revealed 254 benign tumors or tumor-like lesions and 13 malignant tumors, among them 2 metastases of tumors of unknown origin. As expected, enchondromas (n=81) and pigmented villo-nodular synovitis of the tendon sheath (n=104) were the most frequent tumors. All other tumors or tumor-like lesions appeared only as solitary cases or in small numbers. The radiologic characteristics of some of the lesions are reviewed and their histology is presented. Furthermore, some important points of differential diagnosis are discussed.

D010017 Osteoma, Osteoid A benign osteoblastic tumor with central vascularized nidus surrounded by normal reactive bone. It occurs especially in second decade of life most commonly in the femoral neck but can occur in any bone and any site within a bone. Osteoid Osteoma,Osteoid Osteomas,Osteomas, Osteoid
D011859 Radiography Examination of any part of the body for diagnostic purposes by means of X-RAYS or GAMMA RAYS, recording the image on a sensitized surface (such as photographic film). D001845 Bone Cysts Benign unilocular lytic areas in the proximal end of a long bone with well defined and narrow endosteal margins. The cysts contain fluid and the cyst walls may contain some giant cells. Bone cysts usually occur in males between the ages 3-15 years. D002812 Chondroma A benign neoplasm derived from mesodermal cells that form cartilage. It may remain within the substance of a cartilage or bone (true chondroma or enchondroma) or may develop on the surface of a cartilage (ecchondroma or ecchondrosis). (Dorland, 27th ed; Stedman, 25th ed) Enchondroma,Chondromas,Enchondromas
D003884 Dermoid Cyst A tumor consisting of displaced ectodermal structures along the lines of embryonic fusion, the wall being formed of epithelium-lined connective tissue, including skin appendages, and containing keratin, sebum, and hair. (Stedman, 25th ed) Dermoid,Cyst, Dermoid,Cysts, Dermoid,Dermoid Cysts,Dermoids
D005260 Female Females
D005870 Giant Cell Tumors Tumors of bone tissue or synovial or other soft tissue characterized by the presence of giant cells. The most common are giant cell tumor of tendon sheath and GIANT CELL TUMOR OF BONE. Cell Tumor, Giant,Cell Tumors, Giant,Giant Cell Tumor,Tumor, Giant Cell,Tumors, Giant Cell
D005918 Glomus Tumor A blue-red, extremely painful vascular neoplasm involving a glomeriform arteriovenous anastomosis (glomus body), which may be found anywhere in the skin, most often in the distal portion of the fingers and toes, especially beneath the nail. It is composed of specialized pericytes (sometimes termed glomus cells), usually in single encapsulated nodular masses which may be several millimeters in diameter (From Stedman, 27th ed). CHEMODECTOMA, a tumor of NEURAL CREST origin, is also sometimes called a glomus tumor. Glomangioma,Glomangiomas,Glomus Tumors,Tumor, Glomus,Tumors, Glomus
