Border disease: tissue culture studies of the virus in sheep. 1982

B J Potts, and K P Johnson, and B I Osburn

A California strain of border disease (BD) virus was isolated from the CNS and spleen of an infected lamb and was propagated without cytopathic effect on 2 tissue culture systems. Viral antigen was detected in the cytoplasm of infected cells by immunofluorescence. The growth curve of this BD virus in primary sheep choroid plexus cells revealed a latent period of 12 hours and peak viral production by 36 hours after inoculation. The growth curve in porcine kidney cells (PK-15) demonstrated a latent period of 8 hours and peak viral production by 54 hours after inoculation. The primary sheep choroid plexus cell tissue culture isolate of BD virus was then used to develop hyperimmune sera in 2 adult sheep. Neutralizing antibody was not detected until 43 days after primary inoculation when a slow antibody increase occurred in both sheep.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007668 Kidney Body organ that filters blood for the secretion of URINE and that regulates ion concentrations. Kidneys
D010576 Pestivirus A genus of FLAVIVIRIDAE, also known as mucosal disease virus group, which is not arthropod-borne. Transmission is by direct and indirect contact, and by transplacental and congenital transmission. Species include BORDER DISEASE VIRUS, bovine viral diarrhea virus (DIARRHEA VIRUS, BOVINE VIRAL), and CLASSICAL SWINE FEVER VIRUS. Pestiviruses
D002831 Choroid Plexus A villous structure of tangled masses of BLOOD VESSELS contained within the third, lateral, and fourth ventricles of the BRAIN. It regulates part of the production and composition of CEREBROSPINAL FLUID. Chorioid Plexus,Plexus Choroideus,Choroideus, Plexus,Plexus, Chorioid,Plexus, Choroid
D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA. D013552 Swine Any of various animals that constitute the family Suidae and comprise stout-bodied, short-legged omnivorous mammals with thick skin, usually covered with coarse bristles, a rather long mobile snout, and small tail. Included are the genera Babyrousa, Phacochoerus (wart hogs), and Sus, the latter containing the domestic pig (see SUS SCROFA).
