In vitro stimulation of lymphocytes by different strains of cytomegalovirus. 1982

L Gärtner, and J A Wilhelm, and R Czieschnek

The in vitro stimulation of lymphocytes from 15 healty adult donors by 5 different stains of CMV resulted in a positive stimulation ratio of lymphocytes from CMV seropositive donors with each of the 5 different strains. Differences in the absolute strength of the response was observed among the 5 strains for each individual, but we concluded that the use of antigen prepared with 1 strain of CMV is sufficient to obtain a positive or negative result. A maximum value for the in vitro lymphocyte stimulation test, however, will only be obtained using different antigen concentrations from several different CMV strains simultaneously.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007111 Immunity, Cellular Manifestations of the immune response which are mediated by antigen-sensitized T-lymphocytes via lymphokines or direct cytotoxicity. This takes place in the absence of circulating antibody or where antibody plays a subordinate role. D008213 Lymphocyte Activation Morphologic alteration of small B LYMPHOCYTES or T LYMPHOCYTES in culture into large blast-like cells able to synthesize DNA and RNA and to divide mitotically. It is induced by INTERLEUKINS; MITOGENS such as PHYTOHEMAGGLUTININS, and by specific ANTIGENS. It may also occur in vivo as in GRAFT REJECTION. D003587 Cytomegalovirus A genus of the family HERPESVIRIDAE, subfamily BETAHERPESVIRINAE, infecting the salivary glands, liver, spleen, lungs, eyes, and other organs, in which they produce characteristically enlarged cells with intranuclear inclusions. Infection with Cytomegalovirus is also seen as an opportunistic infection in AIDS.
