Identification of a major pathway of strand break formation in poly U induced by OH radicals in presence of oxygen. 1984

D Schulte-Frohlinde, and E Bothe

A reaction mechanism is presented for strand break formation in poly U induced by OH radicals in N2O/O2- saturated aqueous solution based on experimental results obtained with different methods.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007700 Kinetics The rate dynamics in chemical or physical systems.
D011072 Poly U A group of uridine ribonucleotides in which the phosphate residues of each uridine ribonucleotide act as bridges in forming diester linkages between the ribose moieties. Polyuridylic Acids,Uracil Polynucleotides,Poly(rU),Acids, Polyuridylic,Polynucleotides, Uracil
D004247 DNA A deoxyribonucleotide polymer that is the primary genetic material of all cells. Eukaryotic and prokaryotic organisms normally contain DNA in a double-stranded state, yet several important biological processes transiently involve single-stranded regions. DNA, which consists of a polysugar-phosphate backbone possessing projections of purines (adenine and guanine) and pyrimidines (thymine and cytosine), forms a double helix that is held together by hydrogen bonds between these purines and pyrimidines (adenine to thymine and guanine to cytosine). D005609 Free Radicals Highly reactive molecules with an unsatisfied electron valence pair. Free radicals are produced in both normal and pathological processes. Free radicals include reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS). They are proven or suspected agents of tissue damage in a wide variety of circumstances including radiation, damage from environment chemicals, and aging. Natural and pharmacological prevention of free radical damage is being actively investigated. Free Radical
D006878 Hydroxides Inorganic compounds that contain the OH- group.
D017665 Hydroxyl Radical The univalent radical OH. Hydroxyl radical is a potent oxidizing agent.
