beta-Lactamase detection in nine staphylococcal species. 1984

S T Selepak, and F G Witebsky

Detection of beta-lactamase by four different techniques (two acidometric, one chromogenic cephalosporin, and one iodometric) was evaluated with 79 isolates of nine different species of staphylococci. Overall, each technique detected more positive isolates when beta-lactamase production had been induced with oxacillin before testing, and each technique performed equally well when organisms were tested after induction.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008826 Microbial Sensitivity Tests Any tests that demonstrate the relative efficacy of different chemotherapeutic agents against specific microorganisms (i.e., bacteria, fungi, viruses). D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D001618 beta-Lactamases Enzymes found in many bacteria which catalyze the hydrolysis of the amide bond in the beta-lactam ring. Well known antibiotics destroyed by these enzymes are penicillins and cephalosporins. beta-Lactamase,beta Lactamase, beta Lactamases
D013210 Staphylococcus A genus of gram-positive, facultatively anaerobic, coccoid bacteria. Its organisms occur singly, in pairs, and in tetrads and characteristically divide in more than one plane to form irregular clusters. Natural populations of Staphylococcus are found on the skin and mucous membranes of warm-blooded animals. Some species are opportunistic pathogens of humans and animals.
