[Value of the indirect immunofluorescence test in syphilis and toxoplasma diagnosis]. 1983

H L Borkhardt, and W Müller

The examination tests annually necessary for a serological examination for syphilis and toxoplasmosis are in the first place as to their quantity in the diagnostics of the infection. For the performance of this large number of tests the use of a method is necessary which corresponds to the necessities of rationalisation of the laboratory work in the same way as to the demands to quality, which is characterized by specificity, sensitivity and reproducibility. For these criteria in the framework of the syphilis serology the TPHA-test is in a higher degree sufficient (with the exception of the early syphilis) than the FTA-ABS-test. The small quantity of the imported test set which is at present at our disposal does not allow a general application of this test, so that the FTA-ABS-test is the most usual method. Moreover, by means of FTA-ABS-IgM and 19 S-IgM-FTA-ABS-test valuable diagnostic additional informations (early diagnosis of the infection, L. connata diagnostics, estimation of the success of therapy) can be got which neither the TPI nor the TPHA-test are able to give. For the diagnosis of toxoplasmosis the IFT shows at present a higher value of precision than ELISA. It is still to be clarified in how far in the higher sensitivity of toxoplasmosis ELISA unspecificities play a role.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D004797 Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay An immunoassay utilizing an antibody labeled with an enzyme marker such as horseradish peroxidase. While either the enzyme or the antibody is bound to an immunosorbent substrate, they both retain their biologic activity; the change in enzyme activity as a result of the enzyme-antibody-antigen reaction is proportional to the concentration of the antigen and can be measured spectrophotometrically or with the naked eye. Many variations of the method have been developed. D005455 Fluorescent Antibody Technique Test for tissue antigen using either a direct method, by conjugation of antibody with fluorescent dye (FLUORESCENT ANTIBODY TECHNIQUE, DIRECT) or an indirect method, by formation of antigen-antibody complex which is then labeled with fluorescein-conjugated anti-immunoglobulin antibody (FLUORESCENT ANTIBODY TECHNIQUE, INDIRECT). The tissue is then examined by fluorescence microscopy. D006386 Hemagglutination Tests Sensitive tests to measure certain antigens, antibodies, or viruses, using their ability to agglutinate certain erythrocytes. (From Stedman, 26th ed) Hemagglutination Test,Test, Hemagglutination,Tests, Hemagglutination
D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D000918 Antibody Specificity The property of antibodies which enables them to react with some ANTIGENIC DETERMINANTS and not with others. Specificity is dependent on chemical composition, physical forces, and molecular structure at the binding site. Antibody Specificities,Specificities, Antibody,Specificity, Antibody

D014123 Toxoplasmosis The acquired form of infection by Toxoplasma gondii in animals and man. Toxoplasma gondii Infection,Infection, Toxoplasma gondii
D014209 Treponema Immobilization Test Syphilis serodiagnosis employing as the antigen Treponema pallidum obtained from rabbit syphilis orchitis. Treponemes are kept alive for a few hours in a special medium. When syphilitic serum and complement are added and incubated, the treponemes are immobilized, i.e., stop moving.
