Methods and problems of prediction. 1983

J Krauth

A review is given of concepts and problems in statistical prediction analysis. First some concepts of prediction (Bayesian, non-Bayesian, time series and others) are introduced. Then in particular prediction by means of multiple linear regression and multiple discrimination is discussed and hints are given with respect to alternative procedures. Various results concerning prediction in time series and by means of contingency tables and cluster analyses are reported.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008390 Markov Chains A stochastic process such that the conditional probability distribution for a state at any future instant, given the present state, is unaffected by any additional knowledge of the past history of the system. Markov Process,Markov Chain,Chain, Markov,Chains, Markov,Markov Processes,Process, Markov,Processes, Markov
D011600 Psychopharmacology The study of the effects of drugs on mental and behavioral activity.
D011603 Psychophysiology The study of the physiological basis of human and animal behavior. D012044 Regression Analysis Procedures for finding the mathematical function which best describes the relationship between a dependent variable and one or more independent variables. In linear regression (see LINEAR MODELS) the relationship is constrained to be a straight line and LEAST-SQUARES ANALYSIS is used to determine the best fit. In logistic regression (see LOGISTIC MODELS) the dependent variable is qualitative rather than continuously variable and LIKELIHOOD FUNCTIONS are used to find the best relationship. In multiple regression, the dependent variable is considered to depend on more than a single independent variable. D005544 Forecasting The prediction or projection of the nature of future problems or existing conditions based upon the extrapolation or interpretation of existing scientific data or by the application of scientific methodology. D001499 Bayes Theorem A theorem in probability theory named for Thomas Bayes (1702-1761). In epidemiology, it is used to obtain the probability of disease in a group of people with some characteristic on the basis of the overall rate of that disease and of the likelihood of that characteristic in healthy and diseased individuals. The most familiar application is in clinical decision analysis where it is used for estimating the probability of a particular diagnosis given the appearance of some symptoms or test result.
