Mitral leaflet prolapse. 1984

A D Malcolm

Mitral leaflet prolapse (MLP) is a common condition but sudden or subtle incapacity will occasionally present due to (a) arrhythmia, (b) systemic emboli, (c) sudden onset of severe mitral regurgitation due to chordal rupture, (d) non-anginal chest pain. It seems reasonable to allow asymptomatic subjects with MLP to maintain unrestricted flying status provided that they have no family history of sudden death, no evidence of significant arrhythmia on Holter electrocardiographic monitoring, a normal exercise electrocardiogram, and no increase in left atrial or left ventricular dimensions on the echocardiogram. The Holter recording, exercise test and echocardiogram may need to be repeated at intervals. Any departure from these requirements might require restriction to multi-crew operation only.

D008297 Male Males
D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D008944 Mitral Valve Insufficiency Backflow of blood from the LEFT VENTRICLE into the LEFT ATRIUM due to imperfect closure of the MITRAL VALVE. This can lead to mitral valve regurgitation. D008945 Mitral Valve Prolapse Abnormal protrusion or billowing of one or both of the leaflets of MITRAL VALVE into the LEFT ATRIUM during SYSTOLE. This allows the backflow of blood into left atrium leading to MITRAL VALVE INSUFFICIENCY; SYSTOLIC MURMURS; or CARDIAC ARRHYTHMIA. D003645 Death, Sudden The abrupt cessation of all vital bodily functions, manifested by the permanent loss of total cerebral, respiratory, and cardiovascular functions. Sudden Death
D004185 Disability Evaluation Determination of the degree of a physical, mental, or emotional handicap. The diagnosis is applied to legal qualification for benefits and income under disability insurance and to eligibility for Social Security and workmen's compensation benefits. D004617 Embolism Blocking of a blood vessel by an embolus which can be a blood clot or other undissolved material in the blood stream. Embolus,Embolisms
D004697 Endocarditis, Bacterial Inflammation of the ENDOCARDIUM caused by BACTERIA that entered the bloodstream. The strains of bacteria vary with predisposing factors, such as CONGENITAL HEART DEFECTS; HEART VALVE DISEASES; HEART VALVE PROSTHESIS IMPLANTATION; or intravenous drug use.
