Factor VIIIR:Ag/Factor VIII:C and their ratio in obstetrical cases. 1984

D Caires, and C L Arocha-Pinango, and S Rodriguez, and J Linares

Factor VIIIR:Ag and Factor VIII:C levels were found to be significantly increased during pregnancy, labor and puerperium, but not to the extent observed by European and American authors. The ratio Factor VIIIR:Ag/Factor VIII:C was elevated only between the third and sixth hour of labor with respect to early labor, and during parturition and early puerperium with respect to late labor. However, this ratio was in the same range as the normal non-pregnant controls, but in the cases of complicated pregnancy, the ratio reached values much higher than the normal. It was concluded that determination of the ratio appears to be of little value in normal cases but may be of use when there are obstetrical complications. Studies are being performed to try to explain the limited rise in Factor VIII:Ag and Factor VIII:C levels observed in our cases.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007743 Labor, Obstetric The repetitive uterine contraction during childbirth which is associated with the progressive dilation of the uterine cervix (CERVIX UTERI). Successful labor results in the expulsion of the FETUS and PLACENTA. Obstetric labor can be spontaneous or induced (LABOR, INDUCED). Obstetric Labor
D011247 Pregnancy The status during which female mammals carry their developing young (EMBRYOS or FETUSES) in utero before birth, beginning from FERTILIZATION to BIRTH. Gestation,Pregnancies
D011250 Pregnancy Complications, Hematologic The co-occurrence of pregnancy and a blood disease (HEMATOLOGIC DISEASES) which involves BLOOD CELLS or COAGULATION FACTORS. The hematologic disease may precede or follow FERTILIZATION and it may or may not have a deleterious effect on the pregnant woman or FETUS. D004211 Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation A disorder characterized by procoagulant substances entering the general circulation causing a systemic thrombotic process. The activation of the clotting mechanism may arise from any of a number of disorders. A majority of the patients manifest skin lesions, sometimes leading to PURPURA FULMINANS. D005169 Factor VIII Factor VIII of blood coagulation. Antihemophilic factor that is part of the factor VIII/von Willebrand factor complex. Factor VIII is produced in the liver and acts in the intrinsic pathway of blood coagulation. It serves as a cofactor in factor X activation and this action is markedly enhanced by small amounts of thrombin. D000941 Antigens Substances that are recognized by the immune system and induce an immune reaction. Antigen
D014841 von Willebrand Factor A high-molecular-weight plasma protein, produced by endothelial cells and megakaryocytes, that is part of the factor VIII/von Willebrand factor complex. The von Willebrand factor has receptors for collagen, platelets, and ristocetin activity as well as the immunologically distinct antigenic determinants. It functions in adhesion of platelets to collagen and hemostatic plug formation. The prolonged bleeding time in VON WILLEBRAND DISEASES is due to the deficiency of this factor.
