Efficacy of TPN in cirrhotic patients with bleeding esophageal varices . 1984

E De Antoni, and P Grilli, and E Orsi

The efficacy of TPN was evaluated in cirrhotic patients with portal hypertension and bleeding esophageal varices. Two groups of patients were studied: the first group underwent routine treatment and the second group was treated with TPN both pre-and postoperatively. Metabolic humoral parameters (proteins, electrolytes, gas levels) as well as specific nutritional parameters (anthropometric values, immune state, nitrogen balance) of the two groups were compared. The most suitable parenteral nutrition is assessed in cases where the cirrhotic patient shows a severe encephalopathy.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008103 Liver Cirrhosis Liver disease in which the normal microcirculation, the gross vascular anatomy, and the hepatic architecture have been variably destroyed and altered with fibrous septa surrounding regenerated or regenerating parenchymal nodules. D009748 Nutrition Disorders Disorders caused by nutritional imbalance, either overnutrition or undernutrition. Nutritional Disorders,Nutrition Disorder,Nutritional Disorder
D010288 Parenteral Nutrition The administering of nutrients for assimilation and utilization by a patient who cannot maintain adequate nutrition by enteral feeding alone. Nutrients are administered by a route other than the alimentary canal (e.g., intravenously, subcutaneously). Intravenous Feeding,Nutrition, Parenteral,Parenteral Feeding,Feeding, Intravenous,Feeding, Parenteral,Feedings, Intravenous,Feedings, Parenteral,Intravenous Feedings,Parenteral Feedings
D010289 Parenteral Nutrition, Total The delivery of nutrients for assimilation and utilization by a patient whose sole source of nutrients is via solutions administered intravenously, subcutaneously, or by some other non-alimentary route. The basic components of TPN solutions are protein hydrolysates or free amino acid mixtures, monosaccharides, and electrolytes. Components are selected for their ability to reverse catabolism, promote anabolism, and build structural proteins. D004932 Esophageal and Gastric Varices Dilated blood vessels in the ESOPHAGUS or GASTRIC FUNDUS that shunt blood from the portal circulation (PORTAL SYSTEM) to the systemic venous circulation. Often they are observed in individuals with portal hypertension (HYPERTENSION, PORTAL). D000596 Amino Acids Organic compounds that generally contain an amino (-NH2) and a carboxyl (-COOH) group. Twenty alpha-amino acids are the subunits which are polymerized to form proteins. Amino Acid,Acid, Amino,Acids, Amino
