Species differences in levonorgestrel binding to serum proteins of monkey, rabbit and rat blood. 1984

A K Srivastava, and G Chandra, and S K Roy

Levonorgestrel binding to serum proteins of monkey, rabbit and rat was studied. It showed high affinity binding to monkey and rabbit serum proteins but not to rat serum. Characterization by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis revealed that the binding of levonorgestrel occurs to sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and albumin, but in rat it is confined to albumin only. These results suggest species differences in levonorgestrel binding to serum proteins and extrapolation of data from one animal model to another may not be directly feasible.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008253 Macaca mulatta A species of the genus MACACA inhabiting India, China, and other parts of Asia. The species is used extensively in biomedical research and adapts very well to living with humans. D009644 Norgestrel A synthetic progestational agent with actions similar to those of PROGESTERONE. This racemic or (+-)-form has about half the potency of the levo form (LEVONORGESTREL). Norgestrel is used as a contraceptive, ovulation inhibitor, and for the control of menstrual disorders and endometriosis. 18,19-Dinorpregn-4-en-20-yn-3-one, 13-ethyl-17-hydroxy-, (17alpha)-(+-)-,DL-Norgestrel,Neogest,Ovrette,Postinor,Wy-3707,DL Norgestrel,Wy 3707,Wy3707
D011817 Rabbits A burrowing plant-eating mammal with hind limbs that are longer than its fore limbs. It belongs to the family Leporidae of the order Lagomorpha, and in contrast to hares, possesses 22 instead of 24 pairs of chromosomes. D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA. D001667 Binding, Competitive The interaction of two or more substrates or ligands with the same binding site. The displacement of one by the other is used in quantitative and selective affinity measurements. Competitive Binding
D013045 Species Specificity The restriction of a characteristic behavior, anatomical structure or physical system, such as immune response; metabolic response, or gene or gene variant to the members of one species. It refers to that property which differentiates one species from another but it is also used for phylogenetic levels higher or lower than the species. D014316 Tritium The radioactive isotope of hydrogen also known as hydrogen-3. It contains two NEUTRONS and one PROTON in its nucleus and decays to produce low energy BETA PARTICLES. Hydrogen-3,Hydrogen 3
