[About the angiographic diagnosis of intestinal carcinoids (author's transl)]. 1978

G Bardach, and W Fasching, and M Raff

Using two angiographically well documented cases the angiomorphological features of intestinal carcinoid tumors are described. One case is a carcinoid of the terminal ileum with hepatic metastases, the other case a cecal carcinoid without distant metastases. The primary tumor of the second case is strikingly hypervascular--most primary carcinoid tumors heretofore described in literature were hypovascular. In both cases is the mesentery afflicted in the typical manner indicating spread to local lymph nodes. By reviewing the literature the pathophysiologic mechanisms causing the anatomic changes are explained.

D002276 Carcinoid Tumor A usually small, slow-growing neoplasm composed of islands of rounded, oxyphilic, or spindle-shaped cells of medium size, with moderately small vesicular nuclei, and covered by intact mucosa with a yellow cut surface. The tumor can occur anywhere in the gastrointestinal tract (and in the lungs and other sites); approximately 90% arise in the appendix. It is now established that these tumors are of neuroendocrine origin and derive from a primitive stem cell.
