[M-mode echocardiography of left heart in hypertensive patients (author's transl)]. 1981

U Pregnolato, and L Lusiani, and A Pagnan, and C Dal Palù

72 hypertensive patients have been studied by means of M-Mode echocardiography. The results of our study have shown that a consisting number of hypertensives exhibits signs of left atrial enlargement, an increase of the myocardial mass and of the thickness of the posterior wall. The diastolic indices resulted more precociously impaired as compared to the systolic ones. Finally a positive correlation was found between left atrial enlargement, myocardial mass on one hand and mean blood pressure on the other, and between atrial enlargement and myocardial mass.

D006973 Hypertension Persistently high systemic arterial BLOOD PRESSURE. Based on multiple readings (BLOOD PRESSURE DETERMINATION), hypertension is currently defined as when SYSTOLIC PRESSURE is consistently greater than 140 mm Hg or when DIASTOLIC PRESSURE is consistently 90 mm Hg or more. D006332 Cardiomegaly Enlargement of the HEART, usually indicated by a cardiothoracic ratio above 0.50. Heart enlargement may involve the right, the left, or both HEART VENTRICLES or HEART ATRIA. Cardiomegaly is a nonspecific symptom seen in patients with chronic systolic heart failure (HEART FAILURE) or several forms of CARDIOMYOPATHIES.
