The effect of low dose oral contraceptives on the initial immune response to infection. 1984

D A Baker, and J Thomas

The use of oral contraceptives have been shown to produce alterations in the normal physiology of many organ systems. However, little is known as to the effect of oral contraceptives on the immune response. The current study was undertaken to determine if women on low dose oral contraceptives show alterations in their initial immune response. An in vitro assay stimulating human peripheral lymphocytes was used. No differences were found in the proliferative immune response of B- or T-cells in women taking low dose oral contraceptives as compared to controls. This study suggests that the initial immune response of lymphocytes in patients on low dose oral contraceptives remains intact.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007111 Immunity, Cellular Manifestations of the immune response which are mediated by antigen-sensitized T-lymphocytes via lymphokines or direct cytotoxicity. This takes place in the absence of circulating antibody or where antibody plays a subordinate role. D008213 Lymphocyte Activation Morphologic alteration of small B LYMPHOCYTES or T LYMPHOCYTES in culture into large blast-like cells able to synthesize DNA and RNA and to divide mitotically. It is induced by INTERLEUKINS; MITOGENS such as PHYTOHEMAGGLUTININS, and by specific ANTIGENS. It may also occur in vivo as in GRAFT REJECTION. D008214 Lymphocytes White blood cells formed in the body's lymphoid tissue. The nucleus is round or ovoid with coarse, irregularly clumped chromatin while the cytoplasm is typically pale blue with azurophilic (if any) granules. Most lymphocytes can be classified as either T or B (with subpopulations of each), or NATURAL KILLER CELLS. Lymphoid Cells,Cell, Lymphoid,Cells, Lymphoid,Lymphocyte,Lymphoid Cell
D003276 Contraceptives, Oral Compounds, usually hormonal, taken orally in order to block ovulation and prevent the occurrence of pregnancy. The hormones are generally estrogen or progesterone or both.
