Monoclonal antitumour antibodies for tumour detection and therapy. 1984

R W Baldwin, and M J Embleton, and M V Pimm

The potential of anti-tumour monoclonal antibodies for tumour detection and therapy are considered. Immunoscintigraphy of patients following injection of monoclonal antibodies labelled with gamma-emitting radionuclides has been successfully used to detect a range of human cancers including carcinomas of colon, breast and ovary and osteogenic sarcomas. This application of monoclonal antibodies is considered with respect to the design of imaging procedures and the clinical usefulness of the techniques. Another potentially useful application of anti-tumour monoclonal antibodies is for targeting therapeutic agents. This approach is considered particularly with respect to the use of antibodies for targeting cytotoxic drugs.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D009369 Neoplasms New abnormal growth of tissue. Malignant neoplasms show a greater degree of anaplasia and have the properties of invasion and metastasis, compared to benign neoplasms. D011877 Radionuclide Imaging The production of an image obtained by cameras that detect the radioactive emissions of an injected radionuclide as it has distributed differentially throughout tissues in the body. The image obtained from a moving detector is called a scan, while the image obtained from a stationary camera device is called a scintiphotograph. D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA.
