[Treatment of pruritus and polyneuropathy in patients with chronic renal failure by intermittent plasmapheresis]. 1984

P A Vorob'ev, and L I Dvoretskiĭ, and L P Granich

Fourteen patients with chronic renal failure treated with hemodialysis received intermittent plasmapheresis with the purpose of treating skin pruritus and polyneuropathy. Skin pruritus and polyneuropathy were completely eliminated in 10 patients, the intensity of pruritus could be considerably reduced in 3 patients, and one patient did not respond to the treatment. About half of the procedures were carried out on an outpatient basis. No serious complications mandating the procedure discontinuation were noted.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007676 Kidney Failure, Chronic The end-stage of CHRONIC RENAL INSUFFICIENCY. It is characterized by the severe irreversible kidney damage (as measured by the level of PROTEINURIA) and the reduction in GLOMERULAR FILTRATION RATE to less than 15 ml per min (Kidney Foundation: Kidney Disease Outcome Quality Initiative, 2002). These patients generally require HEMODIALYSIS or KIDNEY TRANSPLANTATION. D011115 Polyneuropathies Diseases of multiple peripheral nerves simultaneously. Polyneuropathies usually are characterized by symmetrical, bilateral distal motor and sensory impairment with a graded increase in severity distally. The pathological processes affecting peripheral nerves include degeneration of the axon, myelin or both. The various forms of polyneuropathy are categorized by the type of nerve affected (e.g., sensory, motor, or autonomic), by the distribution of nerve injury (e.g., distal vs. proximal), by nerve component primarily affected (e.g., demyelinating vs. axonal), by etiology, or by pattern of inheritance.
