The improvement of the quality and quantity of primary health care is a major issue in southern Africa. The role of the nurse in the delivery of this care was examined at a workshop conference on 'The extended role of the nurse'. In this article in the conclusions of the conference are reported, and the problems identified in extending the role of the nurse in this field are discussed.
