[Pancreatic polypeptide (PP) (author's transl)]. 1978

R Arnold, and C McIntosh, and E Bothe, and H Koop

Pancreatic polypeptide (PP) can be reproducible measured in serum and tissue extracts by mean of a standardized radioimmunoassay. Dispite extensive investigations into the biological actions of the polypeptide and a range of radioimmunological measurements in serum and tissue the physiological significance of PP is, at present, unclear. The normal postprandial increase of serum PP levels has been reported to be lacking after vagotomy and reduced in patients with chronic pancreatitis. If these observations can be confirmed then PP measurement may be a clinically usefull criterion as to the effectiveness of vagotomy and as an indicator for chronic pancreatic disease.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D010182 Pancreatic Diseases Pathological processes of the PANCREAS. Disease, Pancreatic,Diseases, Pancreatic,Pancreatic Disease
D010187 Pancreatic Hormones Peptide hormones secreted into the blood by cells in the ISLETS OF LANGERHANS of the pancreas. The alpha cells secrete glucagon; the beta cells secrete insulin; the delta cells secrete somatostatin; and the PP cells secrete pancreatic polypeptide. Hormones, Pancreatic
D010455 Peptides Members of the class of compounds composed of AMINO ACIDS joined together by peptide bonds between adjacent amino acids into linear, branched or cyclical structures. OLIGOPEPTIDES are composed of approximately 2-12 amino acids. Polypeptides are composed of approximately 13 or more amino acids. PROTEINS are considered to be larger versions of peptides that can form into complex structures such as ENZYMES and RECEPTORS. Peptide,Polypeptide,Polypeptides
D011863 Radioimmunoassay Classic quantitative assay for detection of antigen-antibody reactions using a radioactively labeled substance (radioligand) either directly or indirectly to measure the binding of the unlabeled substance to a specific antibody or other receptor system. Non-immunogenic substances (e.g., haptens) can be measured if coupled to larger carrier proteins (e.g., bovine gamma-globulin or human serum albumin) capable of inducing antibody formation. Radioimmunoassays
D004063 Digestion The process of breakdown of food for metabolism and use by the body.
D005770 Gastrointestinal Neoplasms Tumors or cancer of the GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT, from the MOUTH to the ANAL CANAL. Gastrointestinal Cancer,Cancer of Gastrointestinal Tract,Cancer of the Gastrointestinal Tract,Neoplasms, Gastrointestinal,Cancer, Gastrointestinal,Cancers, Gastrointestinal,Gastrointestinal Cancers,Gastrointestinal Neoplasm,Gastrointestinal Tract Cancer,Gastrointestinal Tract Cancers,Neoplasm, Gastrointestinal
D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D014628 Vagotomy The interruption or removal of any part of the vagus (10th cranial) nerve. Vagotomy may be performed for research or for therapeutic purposes. Vagotomies
