[Changes in the lung tissue of newborn rats after paraquat as a model of respiratory distress]. 1984

I Haskovcová, and Z Velenská

The influence of paraquat on lung tissue of neonate rats was studied being supposed to mimic a respiratory distress syndrome of neonate children. One subcutaneous dose led to faster evolution of lesions in immature tissue than in adult animals. Lesions of capillary endothelial and alveolar epithelial cells manifested themselves by exudate in primitive alveoli (sacculi) as early as 16 hours after administering of the drug. An impairment of the surfactant and of its production is to be supposed similar to the impairment of air-blood barrier in immature neonate children. That is why the lesions could serve as an experimental model of development and influencing of respiratory distress syndrome.

D008168 Lung Either of the pair of organs occupying the cavity of the thorax that effect the aeration of the blood. Lungs
D010269 Paraquat A poisonous dipyridilium compound used as contact herbicide. Contact with concentrated solutions causes irritation of the skin, cracking and shedding of the nails, and delayed healing of cuts and wounds. Methyl Viologen,Gramoxone,Paragreen A,Viologen, Methyl
D011919 Rats, Inbred Strains Genetically identical individuals developed from brother and sister matings which have been carried out for twenty or more generations or by parent x offspring matings carried out with certain restrictions. This also includes animals with a long history of closed colony breeding. D012127 Respiratory Distress Syndrome, Newborn A condition of the newborn marked by DYSPNEA with CYANOSIS, heralded by such prodromal signs as dilatation of the alae nasi, expiratory grunt, and retraction of the suprasternal notch or costal margins, mostly frequently occurring in premature infants, children of diabetic mothers, and infants delivered by cesarean section, and sometimes with no apparent predisposing cause. D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA.
