Echocardiographic features in the cardiac type of glycogen storage disease II. 1983

W J Gussenhoven, and H F Busch, and W J Kleijer, and V H de Villeneuve

Clinical and echocardiographic findings of a six-month-old female with the cardiac variety of glycogen storage disease II type (Pompe's disease) are described. Obviously thickened right and left ventricular walls were detected with both M-mode and two-dimensional echocardiography. Echocardiographic features were similar to those seen in extreme hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. In combination with the clinical and biochemical features, this echocardiographic technique may be helpful in the early diagnosis of cardiac involvement in generalized glycogenosis.

D007223 Infant A child between 1 and 23 months of age. Infants
D009206 Myocardium The muscle tissue of the HEART. It is composed of striated, involuntary muscle cells (MYOCYTES, CARDIAC) connected to form the contractile pump to generate blood flow. D002312 Cardiomyopathy, Hypertrophic A form of CARDIAC MUSCLE disease, characterized by left and/or right ventricular hypertrophy (HYPERTROPHY, LEFT VENTRICULAR; HYPERTROPHY, RIGHT VENTRICULAR), frequent asymmetrical involvement of the HEART SEPTUM, and normal or reduced left ventricular volume. Risk factors include HYPERTENSION; AORTIC STENOSIS; and gene MUTATION; (FAMILIAL HYPERTROPHIC CARDIOMYOPATHY). D005260 Female Females
D006008 Glycogen Storage Disease A group of inherited metabolic disorders involving the enzymes responsible for the synthesis and degradation of glycogen. In some patients, prominent liver involvement is presented. In others, more generalized storage of glycogen occurs, sometimes with prominent cardiac involvement. D006009 Glycogen Storage Disease Type II An autosomal recessively inherited glycogen storage disease caused by GLUCAN 1,4-ALPHA-GLUCOSIDASE deficiency. Large amounts of GLYCOGEN accumulate in the LYSOSOMES of skeletal muscle (MUSCLE, SKELETAL); HEART; LIVER; SPINAL CORD; and BRAIN. Three forms have been described: infantile, childhood, and adult. The infantile form is fatal in infancy and presents with hypotonia and a hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (CARDIOMYOPATHY, HYPERTROPHIC). The childhood form usually presents in the second year of life with proximal weakness and respiratory symptoms. The adult form consists of a slowly progressive proximal myopathy.
