Effects of macrolide antibiotics on barbiturate sleeping time in mice. 1983

J Descotes, and J C Evreux

Triacetyloleandomycin and josamycin, when administered to inbred Balb/c mice orally twice daily at a dose of 12.5 or 25 mg per kg over 3 days, were found to increase barbiturate sleeping time significantly. In contrast, erythromycin ethylsuccinate, erythromycin propionate, midecamycin and spiramycin were devoid of any such activity under the same conditions.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007933 Leucomycins An antibiotic complex produced by Streptomyces kitasatoensis. The complex consists of a mixture of at least eight biologically active components, A1 and A3 to A9. Leucomycins have both antibacterial and antimycoplasmal activities.

D008807 Mice, Inbred BALB C An inbred strain of mouse that is widely used in IMMUNOLOGY studies and cancer research. BALB C Mice, Inbred,BALB C Mouse, Inbred,Inbred BALB C Mice,Inbred BALB C Mouse,Mice, BALB C,Mouse, BALB C,Mouse, Inbred BALB C,BALB C Mice,BALB C Mouse
D010424 Pentobarbital A short-acting barbiturate that is effective as a sedative and hypnotic (but not as an anti-anxiety) agent and is usually given orally. It is prescribed more frequently for sleep induction than for sedation but, like similar agents, may lose its effectiveness by the second week of continued administration. D005260 Female Females
D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA.
