Ostium secundum atrial septal defect: is it a minor cardiac lesion? 1983

P Arciprete, and C Vosa, and A D'Angelo, and A Pellegrino, and M Cotrufo

One-hundred-ten cases of ostium secundum atrial septal defect, surgically treated from 1975 to 1980, are reported. The early postoperative deaths were two (1.81%), both due to acute left ventricular failure. In the postoperative complications, along with arrhythmia, is left ventricular failure markedly represented (4 cases). These observations can be suggestive of a major role of left ventricular function in the natural course of atrial septal defect and its treatment, and could emphasize the importance of preoperative left ventricular study, effective intraoperative myocardial protection, and early operation (age two years), in order to prevent left ventricular involvement and failure.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007430 Intraoperative Care Patient care procedures performed during the operation that are ancillary to the actual surgery. It includes monitoring, fluid therapy, medication, transfusion, anesthesia, radiography, and laboratory tests. Care, Intraoperative
D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D011183 Postoperative Complications Pathologic processes that affect patients after a surgical procedure. They may or may not be related to the disease for which the surgery was done, and they may or may not be direct results of the surgery. Complication, Postoperative,Complications, Postoperative,Postoperative Complication
D002648 Child A person 6 to 12 years of age. An individual 2 to 5 years old is CHILD, PRESCHOOL. Children
D002675 Child, Preschool A child between the ages of 2 and 5. Children, Preschool,Preschool Child,Preschool Children
D006333 Heart Failure A heterogeneous condition in which the heart is unable to pump out sufficient blood to meet the metabolic need of the body. Heart failure can be caused by structural defects, functional abnormalities (VENTRICULAR DYSFUNCTION), or a sudden overload beyond its capacity. Chronic heart failure is more common than acute heart failure which results from sudden insult to cardiac function, such as MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION. D006344 Heart Septal Defects, Atrial Developmental abnormalities in any portion of the ATRIAL SEPTUM resulting in abnormal communications between the two upper chambers of the heart. Classification of atrial septal defects is based on location of the communication and types of incomplete fusion of atrial septa with the ENDOCARDIAL CUSHIONS in the fetal heart. They include ostium primum, ostium secundum, sinus venosus, and coronary sinus defects.
