The flow-volume loop during glossopharyngeal breathing. 1984

F G Mazza, and A F DiMarco, and M D Altose, and K P Strohl

The flow-volume loops of three patients with chronic poliomyelitis were examined during glossopharyngeal breathing and compared with those during forced vital capacity maneuvers using only chest wall muscles. Peak expiratory flow rates and vital capacities were greater in all subjects after inspiration using glossopharyngeal breathing. During glossopharyngeal breathing, there was a progressive fall in the inspiratory flow rate and volume of each stroke as pulmonary volume increased.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008170 Lung Compliance The capability of the LUNGS to distend under pressure as measured by pulmonary volume change per unit pressure change. While not a complete description of the pressure-volume properties of the lung, it is nevertheless useful in practice as a measure of the comparative stiffness of the lung. D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D010366 Peak Expiratory Flow Rate Measurement of the maximum rate of airflow attained during a FORCED VITAL CAPACITY determination. Common abbreviations are PEFR and PFR. Expiratory Peak Flow Rate,Flow Rate, Peak Expiratory,PEFR
D011051 Poliomyelitis An acute infectious disease of humans, particularly children, caused by any of three serotypes of human poliovirus (POLIOVIRUS). Usually the infection is limited to the gastrointestinal tract and nasopharynx, and is often asymptomatic. The central nervous system, primarily the spinal cord, may be affected, leading to rapidly progressive paralysis, coarse FASCICULATION and hyporeflexia. Motor neurons are primarily affected. Encephalitis may also occur. The virus replicates in the nervous system, and may cause significant neuronal loss, most notably in the spinal cord. A rare related condition, nonpoliovirus poliomyelitis, may result from infections with nonpoliovirus enteroviruses. D012119 Respiration The act of breathing with the LUNGS, consisting of INHALATION, or the taking into the lungs of the ambient air, and of EXHALATION, or the expelling of the modified air which contains more CARBON DIOXIDE than the air taken in (Blakiston's Gould Medical Dictionary, 4th ed.). This does not include tissue respiration ( Breathing

D000328 Adult A person having attained full growth or maturity. Adults are of 19 through 44 years of age. For a person between 19 and 24 years of age, YOUNG ADULT is available. Adults
D013147 Spirometry Measurement of volume of air inhaled or exhaled by the lung. Spirometries
