Using spectroscopic photometry, the catalase-like and peroxidase-like activities of some metal complexes of hematoporphyrins and tetraphenylporphyrins were detected. The rate constant for hydrogen peroxide degradation by porphyrins was determined. The possible mechanism of catalysis is discussed.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007700 Kinetics The rate dynamics in chemical or physical systems.
D008665 Metalloporphyrins Porphyrins which are combined with a metal ion. The metal is bound equally to all four nitrogen atoms of the pyrrole rings. They possess characteristic absorption spectra which can be utilized for identification or quantitative estimation of porphyrins and porphyrin-bound compounds. Metalloporphyrin
D010544 Peroxidases Ovoperoxidase
D011166 Porphyrins A group of compounds containing the porphin structure, four pyrrole rings connected by methine bridges in a cyclic configuration to which a variety of side chains are attached. The nature of the side chain is indicated by a prefix, as uroporphyrin, hematoporphyrin, etc. The porphyrins, in combination with iron, form the heme component in biologically significant compounds such as hemoglobin and myoglobin. Porphyrin
D002374 Catalase An oxidoreductase that catalyzes the conversion of HYDROGEN PEROXIDE to water and oxygen. It is present in many animal cells. A deficiency of this enzyme results in ACATALASIA. Catalase A,Catalase T,Manganese Catalase,Mn Catalase
D002384 Catalysis The facilitation of a chemical reaction by material (catalyst) that is not consumed by the reaction. Catalyses
D003905 Deuteroporphyrins Porphyrins with four methyl and two propionic acid side chains attached to the pyrrole rings. Cobalt Deuteroporphyrin,Deuteroporphyrin, Cobalt
D003962 Dianisidine Highly toxic compound which can cause skin irritation and sensitization. It is used in manufacture of azo dyes. 3,3'-Dimethoxybenzidine,Dianisidine Dihydrochloride,Dianisidine Hydrochloride,Dianisidine Sulfate,O-Dianisidine,3,3' Dimethoxybenzidine,Dihydrochloride, Dianisidine,Hydrochloride, Dianisidine,O Dianisidine,Sulfate, Dianisidine
D006415 Hematoporphyrins Iron-free derivatives of heme with 4 methyl groups, 2 hydroxyethyl groups and 2 propionic acid groups attached to the pyrrole rings. Some of these PHOTOSENSITIZING AGENTS are used in the PHOTOTHERAPY of malignant NEOPLASMS. Haematoporphyrin IX,Hematoporphyrin,Hemedonin
D006454 Hemoglobins The oxygen-carrying proteins of ERYTHROCYTES. They are found in all vertebrates and some invertebrates. The number of globin subunits in the hemoglobin quaternary structure differs between species. Structures range from monomeric to a variety of multimeric arrangements. Eryhem,Ferrous Hemoglobin,Hemoglobin,Hemoglobin, Ferrous
