We studied the effects of red blood cell types on 34 cases of living related renal transplantation. Red blood cell types were examined retrospectively concerning the ABO, Lewis, P, Rh-Hr, Kell, Duffy and MNSs systems in both donors and recipients. The correlation between red blood cell type and acute rejection in HLA identical pairs and the effects of the Lewis, P and other systems on graft outcome in HLA semi-identical pairs were considered. In the HLA identical group, the Rh-Hr and MNSs systems participated in acute rejection. In addition to the ABO and Rh-Hr systems, the Lewis and P systems influenced the graft rejection in the HLA semi-identical group.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007518 Isoantibodies Antibodies from an individual that react with ISOANTIGENS of another individual of the same species. Alloantibodies
D007983 Lewis Blood Group Antigens Carbohydrate antigens structurally related to the ABH BLOOD-GROUP SYSTEM. They may occur as a modification of saccharide chains on glycolipids or glycoproteins on cell surfaces or in plasma, or as free oligosaccharides in secretions. Lewis antigens are not synthesized in blood cells. Instead Lewis glycolipids present in plasma are absorbed onto the surface of ERYTHROCYTES; LYMPHOCYTES; and PLATELETS. The phenotypes Le(a) and Le(b) are the result of the actions of two genes the Le gene (fucosyltransferase FUT3) and the Se gene (fucosyltransferase FUT2) on the precursor carbohydrate, glycolipid or glycoprotein. Other FUCOSYLTRANSFERASES can also synthesize the Lewis antigens. D001789 Blood Group Antigens Sets of cell surface antigens located on BLOOD CELLS. They are usually membrane GLYCOPROTEINS or GLYCOLIPIDS that are antigenically distinguished by their carbohydrate moieties. D004912 Erythrocytes Red blood cells. Mature erythrocytes are non-nucleated, biconcave disks containing HEMOGLOBIN whose function is to transport OXYGEN. D006085 Graft Survival The survival of a graft in a host, the factors responsible for the survival and the changes occurring within the graft during growth in the host. Graft Survivals,Survival, Graft,Survivals, Graft
D006680 HLA Antigens Antigens determined by leukocyte loci found on chromosome 6, the major histocompatibility loci in humans. They are polypeptides or glycoproteins found on most nucleated cells and platelets, determine tissue types for transplantation, and are associated with certain diseases. D000017 ABO Blood-Group System The major human blood type system which depends on the presence or absence of two antigens A and B. Type O occurs when neither A nor B is present and AB when both are present. A and B are genetic factors that determine the presence of enzymes for the synthesis of certain glycoproteins mainly in the red cell membrane. D014181 Transplantation Immunology A general term for the complex phenomena involved in allo- and xenograft rejection by a host and graft vs host reaction. Although the reactions involved in transplantation immunology are primarily thymus-dependent phenomena of cellular immunity, humoral factors also play a part in late rejection. Immunology, Transplantation
