[Various metabolic or toxic effects which can result from short term ingestion of sulfurous acid by the rat]. 1978

M T Lanteaume, and P Morin, and G Palluel, and G Pallaget

The work reported below was conducted for the purpose of evaluating the toxicity of two levels of potassium metabisulfite on various aspects of metabolism in adult rats. It appears that the two doses do not disturb the activity of acid plasmatic phosphatase. The increase of the pyruvic acid o blood caused for the higher level of sulfite (50 mg/kg/day) is considerably increased for absorption of a diet containing 67% of sugar, and considerably decreased by injection the day before the dosage of 200 microgram thiamine. The highest level (50 mg/kg/day) increased the urinary calcium however same larger quantities of sulfite did not cause any augmentation of fecal calcium. The "creatinine clearance" is not modified, the seric transaminases (G.O.T.-G.P.T.) are not disturbed, moreover, hematologic controls during the five months of experimentation did not show any perturbation.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008297 Male Males
D011188 Potassium An element in the alkali group of metals with an atomic symbol K, atomic number 19, and atomic weight 39.10. It is the chief cation in the intracellular fluid of muscle and other cells. Potassium ion is a strong electrolyte that plays a significant role in the regulation of fluid volume and maintenance of the WATER-ELECTROLYTE BALANCE.
D011773 Pyruvates Derivatives of PYRUVIC ACID, including its salts and esters.
D001772 Blood Cell Count The number of LEUKOCYTES and ERYTHROCYTES per unit volume in a sample of venous BLOOD. A complete blood count (CBC) also includes measurement of the HEMOGLOBIN; HEMATOCRIT; and ERYTHROCYTE INDICES. D002118 Calcium A basic element found in nearly all tissues. It is a member of the alkaline earth family of metals with the atomic symbol Ca, atomic number 20, and atomic weight 40. Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body and combines with phosphorus to form calcium phosphate in the bones and teeth. It is essential for the normal functioning of nerves and muscles and plays a role in blood coagulation (as factor IV) and in many enzymatic processes. D003404 Creatinine Creatinine Sulfate Salt,Krebiozen,Salt, Creatinine Sulfate,Sulfate Salt, Creatinine
D004040 Dietary Carbohydrates Carbohydrates present in food comprising digestible sugars and starches and indigestible cellulose and other dietary fibers. The former are the major source of energy. The sugars are in beet and cane sugar, fruits, honey, sweet corn, corn syrup, milk and milk products, etc.; the starches are in cereal grains, legumes (FABACEAE), tubers, etc. (From Claudio & Lagua, Nutrition and Diet Therapy Dictionary, 3d ed, p32, p277) Carbohydrates, Dietary,Carbohydrate, Dietary,Dietary Carbohydrate

D006400 Hematocrit The volume of packed RED BLOOD CELLS in a blood specimen. The volume is measured by centrifugation in a tube with graduated markings, or with automated blood cell counters. It is an indicator of erythrocyte status in disease. For example, ANEMIA shows a low value; POLYCYTHEMIA, a high value. D006454 Hemoglobins The oxygen-carrying proteins of ERYTHROCYTES. They are found in all vertebrates and some invertebrates. The number of globin subunits in the hemoglobin quaternary structure differs between species. Structures range from monomeric to a variety of multimeric arrangements.
