Decreased precipitation of factor VIII related antigen with concanavalin A in patients with a variant of von Willebrand's disease and disseminated intravascular coagulation. 1980

H Takahashi, and N Sakuragawa, and A Shibata

Precipitation pattern of factor VIII related antigen (VIIIR:AG) with concanavalin A (Con A), a glycoprotein binding lectin, was investigated in normal subjects and patients with a variant of von Willebrand's disease (VWD) and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Decreased precipitation with Con A was demonstrated in patients with a variant of VWD in which VIIIR:AG showed an increase in electrophoretic mobility on crossed immunoelectrophoresis (CIE). Similar findings were obtained in patients with DIC which revealed normal electrophoretic mobility of VIIIR:AG. This procedure was assumed to be useful for the detection of a qualitative abnormality of the factor VIII protein.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D011233 Precipitin Tests Serologic tests in which a positive reaction manifested by visible CHEMICAL PRECIPITATION occurs when a soluble ANTIGEN reacts with its precipitins, i.e., ANTIBODIES that can form a precipitate. Precipitin Test,Test, Precipitin,Tests, Precipitin
D003208 Concanavalin A A MANNOSE/GLUCOSE binding lectin isolated from the jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis). It is a potent mitogen used to stimulate cell proliferation in lymphocytes, primarily T-lymphocyte, cultures.
D004211 Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation A disorder characterized by procoagulant substances entering the general circulation causing a systemic thrombotic process. The activation of the clotting mechanism may arise from any of a number of disorders. A majority of the patients manifest skin lesions, sometimes leading to PURPURA FULMINANS. D005169 Factor VIII Factor VIII of blood coagulation. Antihemophilic factor that is part of the factor VIII/von Willebrand factor complex. Factor VIII is produced in the liver and acts in the intrinsic pathway of blood coagulation. It serves as a cofactor in factor X activation and this action is markedly enhanced by small amounts of thrombin. D000941 Antigens Substances that are recognized by the immune system and induce an immune reaction. Antigen
D014842 von Willebrand Diseases Group of hemorrhagic disorders in which the VON WILLEBRAND FACTOR is either quantitatively or qualitatively abnormal. They are usually inherited as an autosomal dominant trait though rare kindreds are autosomal recessive. Symptoms vary depending on severity and disease type but may include prolonged bleeding time, deficiency of factor VIII, and impaired platelet adhesion.
