Von Willebrand's disease and pregnancy. 1981

R Punnonen, and D Nyman, and M Grönroos, and O Wallén

Seven new cases of pregnancy combined with von Willebrand's disease have been reported. Altogether the patients had 11 deliveries, and one abortion after 10 weeks' gestation. The diagnosis was based on the determination of the bleeding time, factor VIII coagulant activity (VIII C), factor VIII-related antigen (VIII RAg) and the ristocetin cofactor (VIII RCoF). Two of our 6 parturients showed profuse bleeding at delivery; in addition one patient showed bleeding after abortion at 10 weeks' gestation. Vaginal delivery is generally safe in patients with von Willebrand's disease. There is a great risk of copious bleeding especially in connection with early abortion, when factor VIII levels are low.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D011247 Pregnancy The status during which female mammals carry their developing young (EMBRYOS or FETUSES) in utero before birth, beginning from FERTILIZATION to BIRTH. Gestation,Pregnancies
D011248 Pregnancy Complications Conditions or pathological processes associated with pregnancy. They can occur during or after pregnancy, and range from minor discomforts to serious diseases that require medical interventions. They include diseases in pregnant females, and pregnancies in females with diseases. D005169 Factor VIII Factor VIII of blood coagulation. Antihemophilic factor that is part of the factor VIII/von Willebrand factor complex. Factor VIII is produced in the liver and acts in the intrinsic pathway of blood coagulation. It serves as a cofactor in factor X activation and this action is markedly enhanced by small amounts of thrombin. D014842 von Willebrand Diseases Group of hemorrhagic disorders in which the VON WILLEBRAND FACTOR is either quantitatively or qualitatively abnormal. They are usually inherited as an autosomal dominant trait though rare kindreds are autosomal recessive. Symptoms vary depending on severity and disease type but may include prolonged bleeding time, deficiency of factor VIII, and impaired platelet adhesion.
