[Definition of apnea in the diagnosis of brain death]. 1982

O Moeschler, and N de Tribolet

Apnea is an essential criterion for the diagnosis of brain death and is often difficult to determine in artificially ventilated patients. Absolute apnea is the absence of respiration when the respiratory center is maximally stimulated by hypercapnia. In a study of 13 cases we show that measuring PaCO2, which must be equal or superior to 50 mm Hg, is mandatory in confirming the stimulation of the respiratory center. The duration of apnea necessary to reach this level is highly variable. It does not induce hypoxemia when the technique of apneic oxygenation is used.

D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D010313 Partial Pressure The pressure that would be exerted by one component of a mixture of gases if it were present alone in a container. (From McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms, 6th ed) Partial Pressures,Pressure, Partial,Pressures, Partial
D012121 Respiration, Artificial Any method of artificial breathing that employs mechanical or non-mechanical means to force the air into and out of the lungs. Artificial respiration or ventilation is used in individuals who have stopped breathing or have RESPIRATORY INSUFFICIENCY to increase their intake of oxygen (O2) and excretion of carbon dioxide (CO2). D001926 Brain Death A state of prolonged irreversible cessation of all brain activity, including lower brain stem function with the complete absence of voluntary movements, responses to stimuli, brain stem reflexes, and spontaneous respirations. Reversible conditions which mimic this clinical state (e.g., sedative overdose, hypothermia, etc.) are excluded prior to making the determination of brain death.
