[Aspects of the immunodepressive action of gentamycin and rifampicin]. 1983

S M Fridman, and D N Lazareva

The effects of rifampicin and gentamicin on the count of the antibody-forming cells (AFC), the titers of hemagglutinins, endogenous colony-formation and activity of the reticuloendothelial system (RES) were studied on uninbred albino mice. An attempt was made to correct the immunity defects induced by rifampicin. In addition to the inhibitory effect of the antibiotics on the primary immune response, i.e. the count of the AFC described earlier, suppression of hemagglutinin accumulation on the 4th day after immunization and inhibition of the absorption function of the RES after administration of rifampicin in a dose of 250 mg/kg were shown. Both the antibiotics induced stimulation of endogenic colony formation when administered for 10 days before the irradiation. It was only gentamicin that produced a stimulating effect after irradiation. The combined use of rifampicin with the immunostimulants prodigiozan, methyluracil or levamisole according to different schemes showed that the only effective combination was that of rifampicin with methyluracil (400 mg/kg) or levamisole (5 mg/kg).

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007166 Immunosuppressive Agents Agents that suppress immune function by one of several mechanisms of action. Classical cytotoxic immunosuppressants act by inhibiting DNA synthesis. Others may act through activation of T-CELLS or by inhibiting the activation of HELPER CELLS. While immunosuppression has been brought about in the past primarily to prevent rejection of transplanted organs, new applications involving mediation of the effects of INTERLEUKINS and other CYTOKINES are emerging. D008297 Male Males
D012157 Mononuclear Phagocyte System Mononuclear cells with pronounced phagocytic ability that are distributed extensively in lymphoid and other organs. It includes MACROPHAGES and their precursors; PHAGOCYTES; KUPFFER CELLS; HISTIOCYTES; DENDRITIC CELLS; LANGERHANS CELLS; and MICROGLIA. The term mononuclear phagocyte system has replaced the former reticuloendothelial system, which also included less active phagocytic cells such as fibroblasts and endothelial cells. D005839 Gentamicins A complex of closely related aminoglycosides obtained from MICROMONOSPORA purpurea and related species. They are broad-spectrum antibiotics, but may cause ear and kidney damage. They act to inhibit PROTEIN BIOSYNTHESIS. D006388 Hemagglutinins Agents that cause agglutination of red blood cells. They include antibodies, blood group antigens, lectins, autoimmune factors, bacterial, viral, or parasitic blood agglutinins, etc. Isohemagglutinins,Exohemagglutinins,Hemagglutinin
D000276 Adjuvants, Immunologic Substances that augment, stimulate, activate, potentiate, or modulate the immune response at either the cellular or humoral level. The classical agents (Freund's adjuvant, BCG, Corynebacterium parvum, et al.) contain bacterial antigens. Some are endogenous (e.g., histamine, interferon, transfer factor, tuftsin, interleukin-1). Their mode of action is either non-specific, resulting in increased immune responsiveness to a wide variety of antigens, or antigen-specific, i.e., affecting a restricted type of immune response to a narrow group of antigens. The therapeutic efficacy of many biological response modifiers is related to their antigen-specific immunoadjuvanticity. D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA.
