[On the binocular function after surgery for detached retina (author's transl)]. 1978

G E Tassler, and H Görtz

Oout of 380 patients operated on because of retinal detachments we have analyzed 106 unselected cases as to their binocular results. The check-up reveals that only 3% of the patients complained of diplopia. After a general analysis of the Custodis-procedure in retinal detachment operations the possible reasons for the stated binocular results are discussed.

D011183 Postoperative Complications Pathologic processes that affect patients after a surgical procedure. They may or may not be related to the disease for which the surgery was done, and they may or may not be direct results of the surgery. D012163 Retinal Detachment Separation of the inner layers of the retina (neural retina) from the pigment epithelium. Retinal detachment occurs more commonly in men than in women, in eyes with degenerative myopia, in aging and in aphakia. It may occur after an uncomplicated cataract extraction, but it is seen more often if vitreous humor has been lost during surgery. D004172 Diplopia A visual symptom in which a single object is perceived by the visual cortex as two objects rather than one. Disorders associated with this condition include REFRACTIVE ERRORS; STRABISMUS; OCULOMOTOR NERVE DISEASES; TROCHLEAR NERVE DISEASES; ABDUCENS NERVE DISEASES; and diseases of the BRAIN STEM and OCCIPITAL LOBE.
