[Epidemiology and prevention of hepatitis B in dentistry]. 1980

J Pirotte

Dental practitioners may be likely candidates for either acquisition or transmission of B hepatitis. Detection of virus B markers in sera indicates that the incidence of both overt hepatitis and asympotomatic HBsAg carrier state is higher among dentists than among the general population. Carrier dentists can transmit hepatitis B but controlled studies concluded that the frequency at which this occurs is probably rare. Hepatitis may be transmitted by non parenteral routes from patients to dentists and from patients to patients, via saliva, or instruments contaminated by blood or saliva. Prevention of B hepatitis implies special precaution for treating high risk patients, the use of efficient sterilization methods and education of the dentists.

D006509 Hepatitis B INFLAMMATION of the LIVER in humans caused by a member of the ORTHOHEPADNAVIRUS genus, HEPATITIS B VIRUS. It is primarily transmitted by parenteral exposure, such as transfusion of contaminated blood or blood products, but can also be transmitted via sexual or intimate personal contact. Hepatitis B Virus Infection
D006512 Hepatitis B Core Antigens The hepatitis B antigen within the core of the Dane particle, the infectious hepatitis virion. HBcAg,Hepatitis B Core Antigen
D006513 Hepatitis B e Antigens A closely related group of antigens found in the plasma only during the infective phase of hepatitis B or in virulent chronic hepatitis B, probably indicating active virus replication; there are three subtypes which may exist in a complex with immunoglobulins G. Several subspecificities of the surface antigen are known. These were formerly called the Australia antigen. Australia Antigen,HBsAg,Hepatitis B Surface Antigen,Antigen, Australia
